Cheap Mattress Sale Calendar: When and Where Prices Really Drop
Many mattresses are on "sale" most of the year. The useful questions are how low the price has actually been, and what the financing on that price costs.
The US mattress sale calendar
Discount depths are typical ranges we see advertised, not guarantees, and many brands run a smaller "sale" all year. The point is to know when the deeper cuts usually come.
| When | Event | Typical advertised discount | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| February | Presidents Day | 15–35% | Often the first big event of the year |
| March–May | New-model season | Clearance on outgoing models | Floor models and old covers marked down in stores |
| Late May | Memorial Day | 20–40% | One of the two deepest; bundles with pillows common |
| Early July | Fourth of July | 15–30% | Similar to Memorial Day, slightly shallower |
| Early September | Labor Day | 20–35% | End-of-summer clearance |
| Late November | Black Friday / Cyber Monday | 20–40% | The other deepest; extended for weeks |
| Rest of year | "Everyday sale" | 10–25% | Treat this as the normal price |
Spotting a fake discount
A crossed-out list price that nobody ever pays turns any price into a "sale". Check the discount against real prices, not the tag:
- Watch the price for two to four weeks before a holiday, or use a price-history extension for big online marketplaces.
- Compare the same model and size across two or three retailers; a large gap usually means one list price is inflated.
- Calculate the price per year, not the percentage off: $380 for a hybrid that lasts seven years beats "60% off" a $1,200 list price on a $480 foam bed that lasts six.
- Read what the sale excludes: some prices apply only to certain sizes, or require a bundle.
- Check that the trial and return terms still apply to the sale price; clearance often cancels them.
Where cheap mattresses are sold
- Online brands. Direct pricing, long trials, frequent codes. Prices stable between holidays.
- Online marketplaces and big-box retailer websites. The widest range of very cheap foam, often from sellers you can't easily contact; check who handles returns.
- Warehouse clubs. A small range at competitive prices and generous return policies; a membership fee applies.
- Flat-pack furniture stores. Budget foam and spring mattresses, often vacuum-rolled, easy to take home the same day.
- Mattress stores and outlets. High list prices, deep sale discounts, floor models; negotiation works. See box vs store.
What financing really costs
Many sellers offer pay-over-time plans. They differ sharply:
| Plan type | On a $600 mattress | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| True 0% instalments, 4–12 payments | $600 total | Late fees if you miss one |
| Deferred interest, 12 months, about 30% APR | $600 if paid in time; if $50 is left at month 12, interest on the original balance can be charged back, roughly $90–100 | High |
| Instalment loan, 20% APR over 12 months | About $667 total | Medium |
| Rent-to-own, $20 a week for 52 weeks | $1,040 total | Very high: more than 1.7× the price |
Deferred-interest plans are the trap: the "no interest" only applies if the full balance is paid by the deadline. If you need to spread the cost, a cheaper mattress paid outright usually beats a dearer one on credit.
A sale-day plan
- Decide size, construction and firmness before the sale, using the firmness guide.
- Shortlist two or three models and note their normal prices.
- On the day, compare the out-the-door price including delivery, removal and tax.
- Check the trial survives the discount, and buy a protector at the same time.
- Enter the final price and fees in the calculator to compare per year.
Avoid the classic traps listed in cheap mattress mistakes, especially final-sale clearance without a trial.
FAQ
When is the cheapest time to buy a mattress?
US holiday weekends, especially Presidents Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day and Black Friday, plus spring when new models replace old ones. Outside those, many brands run a smaller standing discount.
Is buying a mattress on financing a good idea?
Only at 0% with no deferred interest and if you pay it off in time. Deferred-interest plans can charge all the interest from day one if any balance is left at the end.
How do I know a mattress sale is real?
Track the price for a few weeks or check a price-history tool. If the "sale" price is the price most weeks, the list price is the fiction, not the discount.
