How Long Does a Cheap Mattress Last? Lifespan and Cost per Year

Updated October 2026 · Prices are typical US ranges and estimates; check the seller before you buy.

The cheapest mattress per year is the one whose price divided by its useful years is lowest. Years depend on materials and on the sleeper, so here are both.

Typical lifespan by construction

Lifespans are estimates for an average-weight sleeper with a proper base and a protector. Heavier sleepers, couples and no rotation shorten them; the ranges are not tests of any brand.

TypeBudget tierMid-rangeWhat wears out first
All-foam / memory foam5–7 years7–9 yearsLow-density comfort foam softens; base foam develops a dip
Hybrid6–8 years8–10 yearsFoam comfort layers above the coils
Latex / latex hybrid8–12 years10–15 yearsSlow softening; the cover and seams
Innerspring4–6 years6–8 yearsThe thin padding on top; then coils lose tension

The calculator uses the middle of these ranges: 6, 7, 10 and 5 years for budget foam, hybrid, latex and innerspring, and 30% longer for mid-range.

When does spending more cost less per year?

Cost per year is price divided by years. A budget foam queen at $280 over six years is about $47 a year before tax. To match that, a mattress lasting longer can cost:

If it lastsIt can cost up toRealistic example
4 years$187Very cheap foam or innerspring; few reach it
6 years$280The budget foam baseline
8 years$373A budget hybrid at $450 is close but above
10 years$467Latex at $950 is well above
12 years$560Only latex or a well-made hybrid lasts this long

For an average sleeper, budget foam is hard to beat per year. The calculation changes for heavier sleepers, because their cheap foam might last three years instead of six, which doubles its yearly cost to about $93 and makes a $450 hybrid that lasts six years ($75 a year) the cheaper choice.

Signs it's time to replace

  • You wake up stiff or sore and it eases within half an hour of getting up.
  • A visible dip or body impression deeper than about 1.5 inches; measure it with a straight edge across the bed.
  • You roll towards the middle or your partner.
  • Springs you can feel or hear, or lumps in the comfort layer.
  • You sleep noticeably better in a hotel or on a guest bed.
  • Allergy symptoms that are worse in bed, on an old mattress without a protector.

Age alone isn't a reason. A latex mattress at ten years may be fine; a cheap foam mattress at four may be done.

Making a cheap mattress last longer

  1. Use a protector from the first night. Moisture breaks down foam over time, and stains void warranties.
  2. Rotate head to foot every three months for the first year and every six after that. Don't flip a one-sided mattress.
  3. Give it the right base. Slats too far apart or a missing centre leg create a dip that looks like wear. See the bed frame guide.
  4. Don't sit on the same edge every day. Edges on budget foam collapse first.
  5. Keep kids from jumping on it. Repeated impacts break down foam and bend coils.

Each year these habits add is worth roughly a year of the mattress's cost, about $47 on the baseline above.

Repair, topper or replace?

If the mattress is flat but uncomfortable, a topper may buy one or two years; the topper vs new mattress guide works out whether it pays. If there is a dip within the warranty period, photograph it with a ruler and claim before buying anything. If the mattress is past its life and sagging, replace it and check the red flags so the next one lasts longer.

Is a "cheap vs expensive" comparison fair?

Partly. Expensive mattresses often use denser foams and better coils, which last longer, but much of the price difference pays for marketing, showroom space and brand. A mattress costing four times more rarely lasts four times longer. Compare constructions and specs in materials compared rather than price tiers.

FAQ

How long does a cheap memory foam mattress last?

Typically five to seven years for an average-weight sleeper, fewer for heavier sleepers or when the base foam is low density. Rotating it head to foot every three to six months helps.

Is it bad to keep a mattress for 10 years?

Not if it still supports you. Replace it when you wake up stiff, see a dip deeper than about 1.5 inches, or sleep better elsewhere. Age alone isn't the test.

Do expensive mattresses last longer?

Often, because of denser foam and better coils, but not in proportion to price. A mattress costing four times more rarely lasts four times longer.
