Cheap Firm Mattress or Soft? Firmness by Body Weight and Sleep Position

Updated October 2026 · Prices are typical US ranges and estimates; check the seller before you buy.

"Medium-firm" means different things at different brands, and it feels different at 120 lb than at 250 lb. Pick firmness from your own weight and position, not the label.

A starting point by weight and sleep position

Most brands rate firmness from 1 (very soft) to 10 (very firm). The scale isn't standardised, so treat the targets below as a starting point and expect a point either way between brands. Weight is the individual sleeper's weight.

Your weightSide sleeperBack sleeperStomach sleeper
Under about 130 lb4–5 (medium-soft)5–6 (medium)6 (medium-firm)
130–230 lb5–6 (medium)6–7 (medium-firm)7 (firm)
Over about 230 lb6–7 (medium-firm)7–8 (firm)8 (firm)

The logic: a lighter body sinks less, so it needs a softer surface to let the shoulder and hip in; a heavier body sinks more, so the same mattress feels softer and needs firmer support to keep the hips from dropping. Side sleepers need the most give at the shoulder, stomach sleepers the least, because a sagging middle arches the lower back.

Why firm is the safer bet on a tight budget

On budget foam mattresses, the soft feel usually comes from low-density comfort foam, and that is the part that wears first. A mattress that starts slightly too firm often softens into the right feel over the first few months; one that starts too soft only gets softer. That's why, for cheap foam, choosing half a step firmer than the table suggests and adding a topper if needed is usually cheaper than the reverse.

Couples with different needs

  • If one sleeper is much heavier, pick firmness for the heavier person and add a topper on the lighter person's side only: a twin XL topper on each half of a king works.
  • A king made from two Twin XL mattresses (a split king) lets each side choose; it costs about the same as a king in budget foam, but you need a gap filler or a king-size protector to bridge the middle.
  • Hybrids transfer more motion than all-foam. If one person gets up at night, foam may matter more than firmness.

How to test firmness quickly

  1. Lie in your real sleep position for at least five minutes, not on your back for twenty seconds.
  2. Side sleepers: have someone check that your spine looks straight from behind, not curving up or down at the waist.
  3. Back sleepers: slide a hand under the small of your back. It should fit snugly, without a gap and without force.
  4. Stomach sleepers: check that your hips aren't lower than your shoulders.

Heavier sleepers and anyone with back or hip pain should also read the guide for heavier sleepers and seniors. If a topper sounds like the answer, topper vs new mattress works out whether it pays off.

FAQ

Is a cheap firm mattress better than a cheap soft one?

On cheap foam, firm usually lasts longer because soft comfort foam is low density and compresses first. But a mattress that is too firm for a side sleeper causes shoulder and hip pain.

What does 6 out of 10 firmness mean?

Most brands use 1 (very soft) to 10 (very firm), with 6–7 being medium-firm. The scale isn't standardised, so treat the number as a brand's own ranking.

How do I fix a mattress that's too firm?

Sleep on it for three to four weeks first; foam softens. If it is still too firm, a 2–3 inch topper is the cheap fix. Too soft is harder to fix: try a firmer, solid base before replacing.
